Schaeffler and REALTRONIK: ITRS on the road to automated freight wagons

Ahead of InnoTrans 2026, Schaeffler presented ITRS — its axlebox generator combined with REALTRONIK's battery management system.

Presented by Schaeffler
Ahead of InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin (Hall 21, Booth 430), Schaeffler announced the technologies it is bringing to the automation of rail freight wagons: the axlebox generator, the modular ITRS power system and electromechanical linear actuators.
In the release, Schaeffler names REALTRONIK as its Slovenian partner for ITRS.
What ITRS combines
ITRS pairs the Schaeffler axlebox generator with a battery management system from REALTRONIK. Together they give the wagon a dependable onboard power supply, so it no longer relies on the locomotive.
- Power for actuators that open and close doors, hatches and tarpaulins
- Energy for sensors, GPS trackers, communication and automated brake testing
- Fits Y25 and UIC-standard bogies, on new wagons or as a retrofit
Already in the field
The first pilot projects built on the ITRS power system are running, and customer feedback is positive. That confirms the case for automating freight wagons to win back share for rail freight.
